Event: MARCUS MARR (DFA Records)

This weekend, South Africa will be treated to a special event headlined by London-based Marcus Marr, who became widely recognised by his international hit, “The Music”, which charted at number 3 in Spin Magazine’s “The 40 best dance tracks of 2013 so far”.

I got the chance to ask him a few questions and in the interview he shared his current musical inspirations. “I’d say I still take most inspiration from my old musical heroes, like Curtis Mayfield, Prince, and David Bowie. But in terms of current artists I like Todd Terje, Dan Avery and even rock acts like Tame Impala!”

When asked about what we could expect from his shows he had to say that, “I have a lot of unreleased new music that I’m road-testing at the moment. Plus you’ll hear all the most interesting music I’ve heard lately – anything from disco, house, techno, bass. A couple of old favourites usually sneak their way in too. I am fairly low-key when I play – don’t expect lots of Jesus-Christ poses!”

Marcus will be performing on 31 January at JHB’s Kitchener’s and will be supported by Sassquatch, Data Takashi, Andrew the DJ and Casioheart, with Visuals by Sassquatch. And on 1 February he’ll be performing in CT at Assembly and will be supported by Bruno Morphet (Peroxide set), Gateway Drugs, Tommy Gun, Data Takashi, with Visuals again by Sassquatch.

I’m back. And for my first post of the year I have something quite special to share. Last year I threw a party for the first time, that was inspired by the clubkids of the 90s, and this Saturday RAVE will be returning for another night of throwback excess. Something that I’ve also been wanting to do for a while is to post recorded mixes of the music I love, and today I’ll be sharing my first attempt of it, which is appropriately themed to the music featured at this weekend’s party. After the success of the first one, we’re all incredibly excited to be doing it again and if you weren’t able to be there I’ve added a few photos, taken by The Cobrasnake, so you can see what you missed out on.

If Synth were an homage to the kind of 80s aesthetic that the Drive Soundtrack was built on, then Dark Synth would be its evil alter ego. This is a new party that hopes to take the scene to as different a place as Synth, and I couldn’t be more excited to see how it pans out. But what is “dark synth”? Here are a few examples of the sound you can expect, the first of which is by Tannhauser Gate and Coco ᴐaᴚᴃoᵯᴃ who will both be performing on the night. Also performing, will be Philosloth, Ocean Tapes, and Fourth.

This weekend Jose Cuervo will be bringing you The Subways and Fun Lovin’ Criminals along with some of South Africa’s best in what’s set to be the street party of the year.

#PartyAnimals in CT and JHB will be able to migrate between the 3 stages set up in and around The Mills Parking Lot, Newtown, Johannesburg on the 22nd and Harrington Street, East City, Cape Town on the 23rd of November.

Local supporting acts for the international headliners include Desmond and the Tutus, Ryan Gosling, Naas, Beast, kidofdoom, Sideshow, Yo Grapes, The Future Primitives, Battle Beyond the Stars, YOH!, Gateway Drugs, Beach Party and 4th.

For the first time on this blog I’m going to be posting about an event that I’m actually a part of. RAVE is what happens when a few people obsess over movies like Party Monster for too long, and this is our chance to live out those fantasies. This Saturday, myself, Martin Magner and Isa Goemaere from Crazy White Bitches are going to be introducing Cape Town to a whole new breed of parties inspired by the clubkids of the 80s and 9os. To make sure that everyone takes the theme seriously we’ve got a strict NO EFFORT NO ENTRY policy, so if you want to RAVE you better makes sure you look the part. This will also be my first time DJing so if you’ve followed this blog for a while and liked what you’ve heard you’re probably going to enjoy listening to what we’ve got planned. Also DJing on the night will be Crazy White Bitches, Plett Rave (one of half of Sexual Tension) and David West aka Divine Ms Debi Chan.

If you’re ready for something new, something weird and something to fall in love with – RAVE is it.

Event: Untamed Youth | Hello Beautiful EP Launch.

Tomorrow night Untamed Youth will be hosting the launch of Hello Beautiful‘s EP, Supernova Love and will feature a performance by the man himself, accompanied by Laudo Liebenberg, Danielle Hitchcock and Peach van Pletzen, who also appear on the EP. You can hear a teaser of Supernova Love below and as of tomorrow you’ll be to purchase it here.

Also performing on the night are Yesterday’s Pupil (Live Set), Tommy Gun vs Moe Joe, Mudblud and Gateway Drugs, who got remixed by Hello Beautiful below.

I remember a time when going out during the week was a given. When partying on Tuesday’s until 3 the next morning was not only acceptable, it was expected. Joining the working world changed all of that for me, but this Tuesday I’m throwing caution to the wind, reliving my youth and partying like I’m unemployed – and you should too. Crazy White Bitches have teamed up with Cape Town’s favourite mid-week student night and it’s shaping up to be a party that you really don’t want to miss, promising hot girls, bikinis, fake tans and other Spring Break-related paraphernalia. Besides hosting the party, CWB will also be performing alongside Christian Tiger School, Top Decks, Southern Suburbs and Mudblud. Unitl then, you can brush up on your CWB knowledge by listening to one of my recent shows on 2oceansvibe Radio which featured Isa and Fani, to prove (if you weren’t already convinced) that this will be well worth the hangover.
